Order Are You There now!
Are You There is the most lyrically provoking debut I’ve ever read. “Sometimes I feel a pier / growing inside me, as if I am nearing / the end of my grief.” Through reinventions of the elegy and the ars poetica, Samantha Fain has made a book that articulates the complex contemporary manifestations of grief and desire, while still giving us possibility instead of foreclosure. Fain’s poems demand that our loneliness and alienation be understood and sung the same way our spirituality might be. That like our future, sometimes our present can only be imagined.
